Deca Makes PPE Donation to Frontline Workers May 20, 2020

TRENTON ON. May 20, 2020.  For every health care worker on the front lines of Trenton Memorial Hospital or any of the QHC sites, the first line of protection to keep them safe is their PPE – their personal protective equipment, this is critical. One local company, Deca Cables, wanted to be part of the solution to the critical shortage of PPE as a result of this pandemic. So, Deca Cables donated in excess of 50,000 masks, comprised of both KN95’s and surgical masks.  The donation represents a significant financial contribution and it goes a long way towards reducing the PPE shortage.

Darrell Edgett, General Manager of Deca Cables said, “Through various discussions with doctors and health care professionals working in QHC, we realized just how serious and dire the PPE situation really was.  We knew we had to try to do something to help.  The hospitals in our area (Belleville, Trenton, Picton & North Hastings) are at the heart of the communities where our employees work and live.  We were able to leverage supply chain relationships to secure a significant amount of PPE that would benefit many employees.  We decided to donate this equipment to QHC as they have a Covid-19 warehouse setup to support the hospitals as well as others in need such as nursing homes and retirement residences.  It is truly remarkable to see our communities pull together in this time of need.  We are pleased that we could play a small part of it and we remain hopeful that our donation will help make a difference.”

Not all masks are created equal or meet the standards of Health Canada. Therefore, QHC requires all donations from the community be screened with infection control. Fortunately, this gift from Deca Cables has met 100% of the criteria and the masks have been authorized for use (and in use now) at all hospitals. The 3-ply surgical mask will protect the patient and staff from sprays, splashes, and large-particle droplets that could spread potentially infectious respiratory secretions such as Covid-19 from the wearer to others. The KN95 Respirator masks are fitted individually to each staff person to ensure it forms a seal around the nose and mouth to protect against exposure to respiratory viruses and bacteria and reduce the risk of inhaling hazardous airborne particles and aerosols.

“We are extremely grateful to Deca Cables for this donation. We have had a long-standing relationship with Deca and this generosity comes as no surprise. They have always been very supportive of our hospital, our doctors and our staff.” Says Wendy Warner Executive Director of Trenton Memorial Hospital Foundation.
